OUR

ISSUES

UHAI - EASHRI are philanthropic activists in a region where our identities as LGBTIQ+ people and as sex workers are criminalised through punitive laws, where governments actively shut down spaces for movement organising to end discrimination in access to services and healthcare, where societal and public opinion upholds exclusion from families, exclusion from faith communities and denial of basic rights such as access to dignified livelihoods, access to fair hearing and justice by law enforcement.

Our work as activists therefore addresses the issues of poverty and access to dignified livelihoods; healthcare including mental health wellbeing; shelter and housing and education while fighting the societal prejudice, unjust laws and policies that deny our communities humane lives and hope.

UHAI - EASHRI is Eastern Africa’s first indigenous fund for LGBTIQ+ and Sex Workers movements in the region. Since our founding in 2009 we have funded activists and movements organising in 7 Eastern African countries—Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda—and Pan-African organisations working across the continent.
