APPLY FOR A GRANT

At UHAI EASHRI, we believe in African activist voice in resourcing the struggle for equality, justice and dignity for Africa’s sex workers and sexual and gender minorities. We have changed the narrative of how Eastern African movements are resourced, to one of ownership and self-determination by the very activists who live those struggles.

PGC GRANTS (THE PEER GRANTS COMMITTEE)

The Peer Grants Committee (PGC) is participatory grantmaking led by activists. Since inception the PGC has made 491 grants amounting to $6 million dollars to sex worker communities and sexual and gender minorities in Eastern Africa.

PGC reviewers are selected and serve anonymously, and their correspondence with each other and with UHAI EASHRI is kept confidential. Because all the PGC reviewers are nominated from and remain active in our movements, our policy on anonymity enables reviewers to provide honest impressions of all proposals for work independent of outside influence.

TYPES OF PGC GRANTS

SGC GRANTS

The Grants offered under the SGC help our movements seize unanticipated opportunities and respond to emergencies that cannot wait for the yearly allocation through our main granting way which is the Peer Grant making mechanism.

TYPES OF SGC GRANTS

MULTIYEAR GRANTS

These are a new grantmaking approach that offers general support grants that are renewable, and allows grantee partners to be flexible in determining how best to spend resources; better plan, identify opportunities that support their change work, room for innovation and sustain their change work.

Multi year grants are the only grants that are determined by both the SGC and the PGC through an hybrid process.
