Chris Dolan

Chris Dolan, a resident of Uganda, is an activist-academic, author and consultant with over 20 years’ experience in teaching and training, management, movement building and mentoring, qualitative and participatory research, writing, and public speaking in the areas of conflict-related sexual violence, gender, sexuality, masculinities, militarization, dynamics of inclusion and exclusion in conflict and forced migration settings, humanitarian and transitional justice processes in Africa, Europe and South East Asia, and across academic, multilateral and non-government settings. He has been Director of the Refugee Law Project, Uganda since 2006. Chris has created platforms for the voices of survivors of violence and raised global awareness of conflict-related sexual violence against men and boys, he has built and sustained a strong Global-South based institution with international reputation for research, practice and advocacy, and chaired the civil society coalition that overturned the Anti-Homosexuality Act in Uganda in 2014. Chris has a PhD in Development Studies from the London School of Economics (2005), a Masters in Development Studies from the University of East Anglia, United Kingdom (1991), and a Bachelors in Social & Political Sciences from the Corpus Christi College, Cambridge (1990). Previously, Chris was Reintegration Consultant for UNHCR in the Democratic Republic of Congo (2005-2006); Lead Researcher and Project Manager at ACORD in Uganda, focusing on political emergencies and peacebuilding (1997-2002), Lead Researcher and Project Manager at the University of Oxford Refugee Studies Programme, Mozambique and UK (1996-1997); the Founder, Fundraiser and Lead Researcher at the University of Witwatersrand Rural Facility Programme on Refugees and Illegal Migrants and their role in development in South Africa (1994-1996); and Researcher and Community Development Worker at the University of Witwatersrand Rural Facility Programme (1992-1994). Chris has been severally invited for Postgraduate teaching and lecture assignments; most recently being at the Grotius Center for International Legal Studies (2016), the Institute for Social Studies in The Hague (2015), Institute for Development Studies, UK (2015), The Hague Academy on Advanced International Criminal Law (2015), University of Leuven (2015), CERAH Geneva (2015-2017), New York University, US (2014), and University of British Columbia (2014). He has had numerous speaking engagements, convening facilitations, journal reviews, fellowships attendance and professional development courses.
